Falling Leaves

Hasn't this just been the craziest year for weather? With the horrible drought conditions I think most of us thought the fall color wouldn't be that great. It sure has been surprising hasn't it? Scientifically speaking, my theory is that with the dry conditions, the pigments in the leaves became more condensed and therefore we had more vibrant leaf color. I have heard some say it is because we had a little spurt of moisture near the end of summer. However, here at our place we didn't get that moisture and we have had terrific color this year. This is the geeky horticulture stuff I think out sometimes.

Anyway, it's been a beautiful fall until the last week or so when the winds really kicked in blew it all away. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be record breakingly warm with highs in the 80's. Thursday is supposed to be in the 40's! I am more of chilly weather girl and I am excited for the drop in temperature. It puts me in the mood to decorate and bake.

It makes me excited for the upcoming holiday season. Since we moved out to the country and no one would ever see my Halloween decorations, I have tended to decorate more towards a general fall theme. We have hosted Thanksgiving at our house the last couple of years so I can get more motivated for that than Halloween.

The fall weather also makes me want to hunker down with a steamy mug of tea or cocoa and read a good book. Are you reading anything good lately? We haven't talked books for a while now. I have requested "Gone Girl" from the library, but will be on the waiting list awhile. I'd love to know what's on you side table :)

Love your squirrel book! I just finished "The Flight of Gemma Hardy". I loved it. It's by Margot Livesey.
Glad you are blogging, I missed you!

I love your squirrel books! And the jar of bittersweet. I don't decorate very much for Halloween anymore, but it would make a lot of sense if the little I did put out could serve double duty for Thanksgiving as well.
On Halloween afternoon I will hang a few strings of lights outside in the trees, so the neighborhood kids know to come down our block for treats. A pumpkin for the front stoop, a pretty fall centerpiece for the dining table, a couple of old Halloween cards from when I was a kid. Christmas is really the main thing I decorate for. I used to go all out at Easter too, but have decided to scale back on that. Slowly and deliberately simplifying my life.

Wonderful fall decor Jemm, I love everything about this joyous season. The beautiful fall leaves have been blown of the trees by the recent wind and rain. It certainly was lovely while it lasted. Congrats on returning to school, you go girl!!!Greetings from Maine, Julie.

Oh how I love the cover on that squirrel book. Very charming. Autumn seems to have all of us charmed this year.

Our leaves aren't quite changing yet. It has varied from downright hot here to chilly. I am so ready for fall. I don't tend to decorate for Halloween, but just do fall decorations. My children often lament this fact to me. And right now I'm reading The Tale of Briar Bank by Susan Wittig Albert. It's a Beatrix Potter Cottage Tale, and it makes me want to read Peter Rabbit.

There's nothing better than books. As a retired English teacher there is nothing I love better.
